“People with disabilities create a voice in the digital age”
The Photovoice project was a local initiative that was aimed at including and engaging members of the Mackay community who have a disability. The workshops utilised photography and digital media to promote and advocate for equitable access within the Mackay region.
The purpose of the project was to highlight public areas where Mackay Regional Council has provided good access and others where improvements are needed. This will enhance communication between the Council and people with disability, while upskilling participants in the use of photography and other media to document their issues and tell their stories.
Thanks to crucial funding received from Mackay’s RADF and Deaf Services QLD, the participants were involved in free photography workshops which culminated in a public exhibition of the work at the Mackay City Library in December 2013, coinciding with ‘International Day of People with Disability.’
